Tags in CamBuildr are flexible markers you can attach to individual people in your database. They help you segment your audience, control access, manage subscriptions, and personalize communication. This article explains where tags are used, how they’re assigned, and how to manage them across the platform.

What Are Tags?

Tags are labels assigned to people in your CamBuildr database. You can use them to:

  • Segment audiences (e.g. “Volunteer”, “Newsletter Subscriber”, “VIP Donor”)

  • Manage multiple consents (when the Multi-Consent feature is enabled)

Ways to Assign Tags

There are several ways a person can receive a tag in CamBuildr:

1. Manually in the Person Profile

You can open any person’s profile (via Database → People) and manually add or remove tags.

2. During Import

When importing contacts via CSV, tags can be assigned to each person during the import process. You can select one or more tags to apply to everyone in the upload.

3. Via API

When sending people to CamBuildr using the API (e.g. from a CRM or signup tool), tags can be added directly to each person.

4. Via Forms and Apps

Tags can be attached automatically or optionally during form submissions:

  • Automatic tagging: You can configure any form or landing page to assign specific tags automatically to everyone who signs up

  • Self-tagging (Checkbox): You can add a checkbox that lets users opt in to a specific tag (e.g. “Yes, I want to join the climate campaign”).

This is ideal for sign-up differentiation (e.g. selecting between multiple interest areas).

5. Via Emails (Self-Tagging Links)

Each tag comes with a Subscribe URL and Unsubscribe URL. When you include these links in emails, recipients can opt themselves into or out of tags with one click.

  • Clicking a Subscribe link adds the tag to the person.

  • Clicking an Unsubscribe link removes it.

This enables easy management of communication preferences without requiring a full form submission.

Consentable Tags (Multi-Consent Feature)

If your workspace has the Multi-Consent feature enabled, tags can also be used to manage different communication consents.

Managing Tags in the Tag Overview

Under Database → Tags, you’ll find all tags in your system.

Clicking a tag opens the Tag Detail View, where you can:

  • See how many people have the tag

  • Review usage over the past 30 days

  • Access self-tagging links

  • Write internal notes

  • (If enabled) Review consent information

  • Create a Target Audience from this tag with one click

Merging Tags

To clean up your tag structure, you can merge tags. This is useful if you have duplicates or wish to consolidate related tags.

Example: Merge donor_2023 into supporter so all people get the supporter tag instead.

This function is available directly from the Tag overview list under “Actions”.

Best Practices

  • Use consistent naming conventions (e.g. “Newsletter_Summer2024” instead of “nl_june”).

  • Don’t overload people with too many tags—keep the system lean.

  • Use self-tagging links in onboarding emails to let users set preferences.

  • When using tags as consents, always include legally sound wording and opt-in options.

  • Regularly review unused tags and consolidate where possible.
